Tintin

The Adventures of Tintin (also known as The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn is a 2011 American performance capture 3D film based on The Adventures of Tintin, a series of comic books created by Belgian artist Hergé (Georges Remi). Directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by Peter Jackson, and written by Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, the film is based on three of the original comic books: The Crab with the Golden Claws (1941), The Secret of the Unicorn (1943), and Red Rackham's Treasure (1944). It is also the first animated film Spielberg has directed.

Spielberg first acquired rights to produce a film based upon the Adventures of Tintin series following Hergé's death in 1983, and re-optioned them in 2002. Filming was due to begin in October 2008 for a 2010 release, but release was delayed to 2011 after Universal opted out of producing the film with Paramount, who provided $30 million on pre-production. Sony chose to co-produce the films. The delay resulted in Thomas Sangster, who had been cast as Tintin, departing from the project. Producer Peter Jackson, whose company Weta Digital is providing the computer animation, intends to direct a sequel. Spielberg and Jackson also hope to co-direct a third film

Tintin, a young journalist, and his dog Snowy are browsing in an outdoor market in a European town. Tintin buys a model of a three-masted sailing ship, the Unicorn, on the cheap, but is then immediately accosted by the sinister Ivan Ivanovitch Sakharine, and the mysterious figure of Barnaby, who both try to buy the model from Tintin, without success. Tintin takes the ship home, but it is broken during a fight between Snowy and a neighbour's cat. As it breaks, a parchment scroll slips out of the ship's mast. Snowy spots it but is unable to alert Tintin. Meanwhile, incompetent detectives Thomson and Thompson are on the trail of a pickpocket, Aristides Silk. Tintin visits Sakharine in Marlinspike Hall, where he learns that there are at least two model ships.

Later, Tintin is shot at, then abducted by accomplices of Sakharine, and imprisoned on the SS Karaboudjan. On board, Tintin escapes and meets the ship's nominal captain, Haddock. Haddock has been supplied with whisky by first mate Allan, who is working for Sakharine, and the captain is permanently drunk, and doesn't know what's happening on board his ship. Tintin and Haddock (and Snowy) eventually escape from the Karaboudjan in a lifeboat. Sakharine sends a seaplane to find them, but Tintin is able to capture the plane, and fly towards the (fictitious) Moroccan port of Bagghar, but they crash in the desert.

Dehydrated in the heat, and suffering from a sudden lack of alcohol, Haddock hallucinates, and starts to remember stories about his ancestor, Sir Francis Haddock(e), who was captain of the Unicorn during the 17th century. Sir Francis' treasure-laden ship was attacked by a pirate ship, led by the masked Red Rackham, and, after a fierce battle and eventual surrender, Sir Francis chose to sink the Unicorn, and most of the treasure, rather than allow it to fall into Rackham's hands. It transpires that there were three models of the Unicorn, each containing a scroll. Together, the scrolls will reveal the location of the sunken Unicorn, and its treasure.

In Bagghar, Tintin and the Captain find out that the third model ship is in the possession of the wealthy Omar Ben Salaad, but it is encased in a bullet-proof glass display case. Sakharine's plan is to stage a concert involving famous diva Bianca Castafiore, the "Milanese nightingale", whose penetrating singing voice will be able to shatter the glass case, allowing Sakharine's trained hawk to fly down and steal the third scroll. After a chase down to the harbour, pursued by Tintin and Haddock, Sakharine finally escapes with all three scrolls. Tintin chases him back to Europe and arranges a police reception for him on the dockside. Haddock and Sakharine, who is revealed to be the descendant of Red Rackham, replay their ancestors' swashbuckling sword fight, using dockside cranes, and Haddock is eventually victorious.

With the three scrolls in their possession, Tintin and Haddock find that the indicated location is Marlinspike Hall, and that the hall had been built originally by Sir Francis Haddock. There, in the cellar, they find some of the treasure, and a clue to the location of the sunken Unicorn.

Don 2: The King is Back

Don 2: The King is Back is a 2011 Indian crime thriller film directed by Farhan Akhtar. It is a sequel to the 2006 film, Don: The Chase Begins Again. The film stars Shahrukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra in lead roles while Om Puri, Lara Dutta and Kunal Kapoor play supporting characters. Shooting was carried out in India, Germany, Malaysia and Switzerland. The plot of the film continues from the end of the first film, starting in Malaysia and moving to Europe. The release and marketing of the film was carried out on 23 December 2011 by Reliance Entertainment, in both 2D and 3D formats, which included the dubbed versions in Tamil and Telugu. Before opening up, it also attracted a lot of controversies, including the case with Nariman films, the producers of the original Don and the issue with the health ministry of India.
The idea for a sequel to Don: The Chase Begins Again had been conceptualized ever since the first movie released, and it was officially announced by Farhan Akhtar shortly after the release. However, he was involved with other commitments while Shah Rukh Khan needed to recover from a shoulder surgery, so he gave his dates to Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and My Name Is Khan because they required very little physical exertion. In February 2010, Akhtar revealed that the script and locations for the movie had been finalized. In an interview with DNA Akhtar revealed that he decided to pick up the character again because it still had a lot to offer: "I am wary of sequels having to be made. You should not touch it if you don't have a nice story to tell. With Don 2 I could finally make an action thriller the way I wanted to. Good story, classic action and simple plot which has one goal and work towards it effectively and dramatically."The film marks Akhtar's return to direction after a gap of nearly 5 years, the last film he directed being Don. Anand Subaya was chosen as the main editor of the film, while Ritesh Soni was roped in to oversee the production of music. It also marks Khan's return to playing villainous characters since his earlier films like Darr, Baazigar and Anjaam (Shahrukh Khan received the Filmfare Awards for Best Villain for his performance in Darr and Anjaam). The film is the first sequel in Khan's two-decade long career.

Don 2 had a different team of writers from the first film, and it included Akhtar, Ameet Mehta and Amrish Shah. Akhtar stated that "The first film was my father's vision, but Don 2 is being written by fans only. These are yours truly and two new enthusiastic boys, Ameet and Amreesh, who came to me with their ideas on how the story can be carried forward. I've thrown my ideas at them. Don 2 is basically being written by three Don fans who are having a ball carrying the story forward."On November 15, it was announced that Khan became the first celebrity to register a tattoo in his name, when the 'D' tattoo ported on his arm in the film was registered for copyright protection.

In August 2011, the makers of the film announced that they would release the film in 3D. The idea of the 3D conversion occurred to Akhtar while shooting for the film, and after conducting various conversion tests in Los Angeles the producers decided to convert the entire film. Also, the director of photography had shot the film with special lenses which made it easier to give it a third dimension. Sidhwani revealed that he had the idea of converting the film into 3D after seeing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. Chuck Comisky, a veteran S-3D innovator who supervised the 3D stereo and visual effects on Avatar and Sanctum, was roped in for the film.

Naruto (Amimated Cartoon Movie)

NARUTO is an ongoing Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto. The plot tells the story of Naruto Uzumaki, an adolescent ninja who constantly searches for recognition and aspires to become the Hokage, the ninja in his village who is acknowledged as the leader and the strongest of all. The series is based on a one-shot comic by Kishimoto that was published in the August 1997 issue of Akamaru Jump. Twelve years before the start of the series, a powerful creature known as the Nine-tailed Demon Fox attacked the ninja village Konohagakure, decimating many people. In response, the leader of Konohagakure's ninja military – the Fourth Hokage – sacrificed his life to seal the demon inside the newborn Naruto Uzumaki. Konohagakure, however, regarded Naruto as if he were the demon fox itself and mistreated him throughout most of his childhood. A decree made by the current Kage, the Third Hokage, forbade anyone mention the attack of the demon fox to anyone else. This included Naruto, who was not aware of the demon inside of him. Years later, Naruto is tricked by the renegade ninja Mizuki into stealing a forbidden scroll that would teach him a secret ninja technique, but he is stopped by his teacher, Iruka Umino. When Iruka almost dies while protecting Naruto from Mizuki, who also reveals that he is the container of the Nine-Tailed Fox, Naruto uses the Jutsu he learned from the scroll that creates multiple clones of himself, Shadow Clone Technique, to defeat Mizuki.

Naruto is assigned alongside, Sasuke Uchiha, who he competes against often, and Sakura Haruno, by Iruka after his class graduate from the Ninja Academy to form a three-person team named Team 7 under an experienced and severe sensei named Kakashi Hatake. Like all the ninja teams from every village, Team 7 is charged with completing missions requested by villagers, such as doing chores or being bodyguards. After several missions, Kakashi allows Team 7 to participate into a ninja exam in which they can advance to a higher rank, and thus, take part in more difficult missions. During the exams, Orochimaru, a criminal at the top of Konohagakure's most wanted list, attacks Konoha and kills the Third Hokage in an act of revenge. This forces one of the three legendary ninja, Jiraiya to search for his former teammate Tsunade, who has been nominated to become the Fifth Hokage. During the search, it is revealed that Orochimaru desires to acquire Sasuke due to his powerful genetic heritage. Believing Orochimaru will be able to give him the strength needed to kill his brother Itachi, who destroyed his clan, Sasuke joins him. Tsunade sends a group of ninja including Naruto to make Sasuke return to Konoha, but Naruto is unable to defeat him and bring him back to the village. Naruto does not give up on Sasuke, however, and he leaves Konoha to train for two-and-a-half years under Jiraiya's tutelage in order to prepare himself for the next time he encounters Sasuke.

After the training period, a criminal organization called Akatsuki attempts to capture the nine powerful tailed beasts that are sealed within people - including the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox sealed inside of Naruto. Several ninjas from Konohagakure, including Team 7, fight against the Akatsuki members and search for their teammate Sasuke. Although they manage to save Gaara, the host of the One-Tailed beast, Akatsuki is successful in capturing seven of the creatures. In the meantime, Sasuke betrays Orochimaru and faces Itachi to take revenge. After Itachi dies in battle, Sasuke is told by the Akatsuki founder Madara Uchiha that Itachi was ordered by Konohagakure's leadership to destroy his clan. Saddened with this revelation, Sasuke joins forces with Akatsuki to kill Konohagakure's superior who ordered the Uchihas' elimination.Meanwhile, as several Akatsuki members are defeated by the Konohagakure ninjas, their leader, Pain, invades the village to capture Naruto. However, Naruto defeats him and convinces him to abandon the village. With Pain's eventual death, Madara announces that he wants to obtain all nine of the tailed beasts in order to perform an illusion powerful enough to control all of humanity. All the leaders of the five ninja villages refuse to aid him, and instead, join forces to confront him and his allies. This results into a fourth ninja world war between the unified armies of the Five Great Countries collectively known as the "Ninja Alliance Army" and Akatsuki's forces. Naruto is one of the best selling manga of all time having sold more than 113 million copies in Japan. Serialized in Viz's Shonen Jump magazine, Naruto has become one of the company's best-selling manga series. The English adaptation of the series has also appeared in the USA Today Booklist several times and volume 7 won the Quil Award in 2006. Reviewers from the series have praised the balance between fighting and comedy scenes, as well as the characters' personalities, but have criticized it for using standard shōnen plot elements.

Film

A film, also called a movie or motion picture, is a series of still or moving images. It is produced by recording photographic images with cameras, or by creating images using animation techniques or visual effects. The process of filmmaking has developed into an art form and industry. Films are cultural artifacts created by specific cultures, which reflect those cultures, and, in turn, affect them. Film is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular entertainment and a powerful method for educating – or indoctrinating – citizens. The visual elements of cinema give motion pictures a universal power of communication. Some films have become popular worldwide attractions by using dubbing or subtitles that translate the dialogue into the language of the viewer.Films are made up of a series of individual images called frames. When these images are shown rapidly in succession, a viewer has the illusion that motion is occurring. The viewer cannot see the flickering between frames due to an effect known as persistence of vision, whereby the eye retains a visual image for a fraction of a second after the source has been removed. Viewers perceive motion due to a psychological effect called beta movement.
The making and showing of motion pictures became a source of profit almost as soon as the process was invented. Upon seeing how successful their new invention, and its product, was in their native France, the Lumières quickly set about touring the Continent to exhibit the first films privately to royalty and publicly to the masses. In each country, they would normally add new, local scenes to their catalogue and, quickly enough, found local entrepreneurs in the various countries of Europe to buy their equipment and photograph, export, import and screen additional product commercially. The Oberammergau Passion Play of 1898[citation needed] was the first commercial motion picture ever produced. Other pictures soon followed, and motion pictures became a separate industry that overshadowed the vaudeville world. Dedicated theaters and companies formed specifically to produce and distribute films, while motion picture actors became major celebrities and commanded huge fees for their performances. Profit is a key force in the industry, due to the costly and risky nature of filmmaking; many films have large cost overruns, a notorious example being Kevin Costner's Waterworld. Yet many filmmakers strive to create works of lasting social significance. Time Command Mini from Stem Innovation

This is the Time Command Mini by Stem Innovation, makers of the iZON Remote Room Monitor for iDevices. The Time Command Mini is also made for iDevices, and normal docks are just accommodating for the iPod and iPhone. This one will hold the iPad. To me, I think that this is a very important feature.

I got a chance to try it out for myself, and I was pretty amazed at the sound. The official site states that “don’t let the small footprint fool you”, and that also applies to the big sound coming from its small size.

The Time Command Mini is really designed for those who have an iPod/iPhone dock by their bed and use it as an alarm clock. Once an iDevice is connected to the Time Command Mini, the time on the clock syncs with the time on the iDevice. This is very cool.

There is a report out there that claims Apple’s devices are still the most desirable, never mind the fact that there are more Android-powered smartphones being used by the masses at the moment. I do wonder though – do all the rest of the mid-range Android owners really, really want an iPhone but could not afford one, hence settling for an Android device instead? I would have thought that they would hold out with their current phones first, and make the switch to perhaps the free iPhone 3GS at the moment, never mind that it is behind by a couple of generations. Well, iPhone owners now have a new toy to play with – the £79.99 iKon RC Buggy.

This unique device will be able to cruise around the floor at around 10ft per second (that would make it go at around 7mph), where it ought to be able to shrug off some minor knocks and accidents since it is made from aluminum. Not only that, rack and pinion steering as well as high-grip tyres make sure that controls are responsive enough to deliver superb handling. Even when you decide to send the iKon RC Buggy on an uneven ground mission, it will be able to do just fine with an independent wishbone suspension system.

The official site states that “don’t let the small footprint fool you”, and that also applies to the big sound coming from its small size.

iPhone gets built-in bottle opener in Opena Case

There are iPhone cases, and then there are iPhone cases – case in point (pardon the pun), the Opena Case that will work with not only the iPhone 4, but the more recent iPhone 4S as well. What makes the Opena Case different from all the other cases that you have seen in the past? For starters, it will not come with “luggage” such as corny drawings as well as Swarovski crystals, but rather, will feature a slide out bottle opener made out of stainless steel to add that bit of “Ooomph!”. Fitting both GSM and CDMA devices from Apple, the cool factor is definitely something worth looking into. The asking price? AUD$39, and increase that figure to AUD$44 if you want to have it shipped internationally if you live outside of the US, Canada and Australia.

Edifier does the Tick Tock dance

Edifier, a name that is synonymous with audio devices, has just announced the introduction of a trio of devices – the Tick Tock Dock, Tick Tock Bluetooth and Tick Tock SD/USB/FM Radio speaker systems. Coming in black, white and beige shades, Edifier’s collection of Tick Tock Alarm clocks will merge retro styling with modern features, in order to deliver versatile music playback options in the form factor of an easy-to-use alarm clock.

The Tick Tock collection will sport a half-round design that clearly rolls back the years, making it look like one of those classic alarm clocks from the 1960s, although you will not find them loud bells – as they are already replaced by 1.5″ omni-directional stereo speakers which will do their part in delivering expansive 360-degree sound from Tick Tock’s 7-watt speaker drivers.

Megaphone horn speaker for the iPhone

Some of you might remember when we went hands-on with the iHorn, a stand/speaker that essentially uses no electricity, but relies on natural acoustics for louder sound.

Think of it like the big horn on those old gramophones. We all know that the iPhone speaker is pretty diminutive, so we could use a little amplifier that works like one of those giant Bavarian horns on the mountaintops.

Yes, this is definitely an energy-saver, and here is another illustration: one of those gigantic cones that cheerleaders yell into. I don’t have any stats on how high the volume goes to, but in comparison to the iPhone speaker, think of it as turning it up to…I don’t know, fifteen?

PowerSkin Gaming Skin for iOS announced

The iOS operating system from Apple has certainly done a whole lot to promote smartphones as a viable gaming platform – you see Nintendo and Sony executives pulling long faces, knowing that casual games for the iPhone and iPod touch have certainly cannibalized sales of the PSP and Nintendo 3DS to a certain degree, no matter how small or little it might be perceived. Well, one thing about the iPhone as a portable gaming device of your choice though – it will definitely drain the battery far more than normal, turning it into an extremely abysmal figure where battery life is concerned. This is where PowerSkin brings their iPhone case expertise to the forefront – with the introduction of the Gaming Skin for iOS.

Behringer iNuke Boom might be loudest iDevice dock yet

I know that I have mentioned this before, that iPod/iPhone/iPad docks are dime a dozen – but just how loud can such devices get? If you are renting an apartment and want to irritate the rest of your owner’s neighbors, or just want to make a plain nuisance of yourself, then you would do well to consider the iNuke Boom from Behringer. The name of this particular iDevice dock is rather obvious, it will deliver audio levels and quality that, in street parlance, “is the bomb.” The big question is this, just how much more explosive can it get?

The name Behringer might give you a clue, being an award-winning innovator of affordable professional audio and music equipment. In order to celebrate the launch of 50 new consumer audio products, Behringer’s iNuke Boom is proud to be the loudest iPad, iPod and iPhone dock that anyone and everyone would have ever come across at CES next year in Las Vegas – which incidentally, is only a month away.

Colonel Littleton’s No. 46 Phone Holster

Remember how I talked about the Mo-Tool being the perfect manly gift? Well, I still think it is, but if you have someone on your list who likes quality leather goods as much as his smartphone, then you might want to look into the Colonel Littleton’s No. 46 Holster.

The holster is designed to protect the iPhone, iPod, MP3 Player, or any other small device. There is a vertical belt loop on the back that can accommodate most 1 1/2 inch belts.

Colonel Littleton takes more pride in his work than Colonel Sanders. The holster came with a card explaining how his leather goods are “American vegetable-tanned steer hide that has received a minimum of alteration”. You check out the good Colonel’s website if you want to here more about that, and I highly recommend looking at some of his other products as well. For some reason, I can’t help but think that Colonel Littleton’s products are a perfect gift for steampunk enthusiasts.

Even though the official word on the Griffin site is that the No. 46 holster can accommodate “taller phones”, but it didn’t quite fit my Droid X. I am guessing that any phone with a larger than 4 inch display might not fit either.

The No. 46 Holster can be purchased on Griffin’s site for about $65.00, and it is available in both brown leather or black.

Heat Sensitive Global Warming Mug

I have written a lot of articles about the environment and gadgets which can probably and possibly solve our environmental problems. It is really a good thing people take time in inventing gadgets which contribute to the betterment of the environment. But despite this, there are still those who continue in damaging our atmosphere and the ozone layer, aggravating the Global Warming which is currently damaging millions of crops and habitats all over the world. It is actually a very sad fact that there have been too much catastrophe brought about by global warming. In Pakistan, floods have damaged thousands of villages and killed lives. In many other countries, natural calamities are inevitable. They are all products of human activities which destroy the natural balance of the world.

This reality means there is definitely a great need for some reminders about how much we need to take care and preserve the environment. It is best if we do this way before nature makes its own way of reminding us. The heat sensitive global warming mug is one helpful gadget which shows the parts of the world which produces the highest amount of CO2 as the mug is heated up. Once it is cooled down, it goes back to its normal state. This will help in reminding people (even during their coffee breaks) to preserve the environment.
